The choice of formulas that will support the treatment of infants and older children should always be consulted with a doctor. We should not act on our own as we can do more harm than help. However, it is worth acting from the first symptoms of a cold in order to prevent the development of the disease and dangerous complications.

1. When the fever occurs

The child becomes drowsy, has glassy eyes, flushed face and dry mouth. If the fever is very high, your baby may also be cold. Most often, it is the fever that is the first symptom of a cold. It is also a signal that the body has started to fight the virus. When the fever exceeds 38C, it is a signal that it should be reduced. In this case, we can use drugs containing paracetamol or ibuprofen intended for children. They have antipyretic, analgesic and antibacterial properties. These drugs are available in syrups, suppositories and sachets.

2. When you have a runny nose

A runny nose is also one of the basic symptoms of a cold. Immediately afterwards, a cough and a sore throat may appear, as the flowing secretion irritates the throat and triggers a coughing reflex. A runny nose is accompanied by a weakened sense of taste, stuffy nose and general irritability.

With a runny nose, you should clean your nose frequently. Older children should blow out thin secretions. If a baby gets a runny nose, use an aspirator to remove the secretions. To dissolve it, we can use sea water spray, saline, which we can also use for inhalations. Nasal drops are the last resort, the administration of which should be decided by the doctor.

3. Cough in infants and older children

A cough may occur after your child has a runny or sore throat. Throat irritation with the development of the disease turns into a cough. Most often, a dry cough appears first, as the discharge has not yet reached the upper respiratory tract. The mucus then appears as the baby tries to cough it up.

In the case of dry cough in infants, antitussive preparations that inhibit the cough reflex and facilitate falling asleep will be helpful. Thanks to this, we do not irritate the bronchi. We treat a damp cough with expectorant syrup, which helps to get rid of the secretions from the body. However, it should be remembered that the expectorant syrup is administered only until 4 pm - 5 pm. If you take it later, it may not stop your coughing attacks in the evening and at night. Thus, it will make it much more difficult to fall asleep.
