Interpretation of the poem: how to write it correctly?

The poem may be difficult to interpret. This task is easier when we realize that there is no pattern in this case. There can be many interpretations and each of them will be correct, as long as it is not overinterpretation. How to understand?

The term 'interpretation' comes from a Latin word interpretatio and means "explaining". The interpreter is one who tries to explain what the text is about. He translates individual elements of the work, revealing the meanings and secrets hidden in it for the reader.

The origins of the interpretation of texts can be found in antiquity. The first interpreters of the texts then spoken were priests who explained to people the secrets of the gods.

1. Step by step interpretation of the poem

First, you need to define the context of the work. It may be e.g. the author's biography (e.g. Crimean sonnets should be interpreted bearing in mind Adam Mickiewicz's journey to the Crimea). The literary era in which the work was created is also important.

In the next step, we consider in what context the work should be considered, e.g. social, cultural, political, religious, etc. For example: Władysław Reymont's "Peasants" is a picture of the life of a rural community at a specific historical moment.

The context is most often "certain", checked, as opposed to the interpretation, which will always be only a suggestion. We are unable to answer the question of what the author meant. This is not what interpretation is about. It is about reading what we ourselves can understand from a given text.

When we start the interpretation process, we have to reach the unique meaning of the piece. This is a difficult task because it requires finding meanings in sometimes hardly grasped layers of the text.

Interpretations may vary. Kowalski may understand the text differently than Nowak. And each of them is right and has the right to express their opinion. But beware: there is no complete freedom of interpretation, as it would mean the lack of common cultural roots.

According to the assumptions of hermeneutics, interpretation is an attempt to reach the implicit meaning of a text. There is a kind of relationship between the author and the interpreter, which removes the opposition between the text and the person who is to analyze it. The interpretation itself has no hard and fast rules or methods.

3. What is overinterpretation?

It is incorrect in its assumption to overinterpret the text, which contains conclusions drawn from premises clearly contradictory to what is contained in the work. It is also based on misunderstanding words or placing a work in an era to which it does not belong. He makes generalizations that do not come from the text, but the so-called "Common truths".
